A transport planning charity has called for measures to ensure the Mill Lane bridleway is kept clear of traffic if plans for a new housing estate get the go-ahead.
Leading UK charity Sustrans campaigns for more travel options for people to travel on foot, bike or by public transport on their daily journeys.
Commenting on plans by Hockenhull Properties Ltd to build 36 homes on green field off Mill Lane they recommend that the "continuity of the bridleway route as a largely traffic-free path should be preserved through the development, with convenient connections into the estate for those choosing to walk/cycle."
They also recommend that vehicle speeds on the estate should be restricted to less than 20 mph and that the design of any smaller properties should include storage areas for residents' buggies and bicycles.
They also suggest that even for a site of this size they would like to see travel planning with targets and monitoring of traffic to and from the site.
Sustrans is a charity that works with communities, policy makers and partner organisations to promote healthier, cleaner and cheaper journeys and better, safer spaces to work and live in.
By 2020 Sustrans wants four out of five local journeys to be made by bike, foot or public transport – double the current figure. You can find out more by visiting the Sustrans website.
