Firefighters are urging caution for everyone using barbecues following a serious incident in Congleton on Bank Holiday Monday.

A fire and rescue crew was called to a house following reports of a fire just after 4.50pm on Bank Holiday Monday. They found that, after a liquid had been added to the barbecue to help it burn quicker, a flashover had occurred leaving two people with burns, one seriously injured.

A flashover is when there is a sudden and rapid spread of fire through the air caused by the ignition of smoke or fumes from surrounding objects. It can have very serious consequences.

The fire had burnt out very quickly prior to the Service arriving at the scene but the crews needed to make the area safe as the two casualties were taken to hospital, one by air ambulance.

Speaking from the scene, Watch Manager Keith Forshaw, said: "By far the biggest danger is the use of flammable liquids to light a barbecue. The reaction can be violent and highly dangerous."

Safety tips

  • Make sure your barbecue is in good working order
  • Ensure the barbecue is on a flat site, well away from a shed, trees or shrubs
  • Keep children, garden games and pets well away from the cooking area
  • Never leave the barbecue unattended
  • Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies
  • Ensure the barbecue is cool before attempting to move it
