On 15th June, 15 members of the History Society were given a guided tour of Whitmore Hall, 4 miles from Newcastle-under-Lyme.
The Hall is a Grade 1 listed building and has been the family home of the Mainwarings, descendants of the original Norman owners, for over 900 years.
There are around 52 rooms in this manor house, a dozen or so of which we were shown around, including the old servants' quarters in the cellars. Each of the family rooms was light and beautifully-decorated, and the house is still very much a true family home, lived in by the present owners Guy and Christine Cavenagh-Mainwaring, who both came by especially to greet our party.
Unfortunately, the weather was so bad we were unable to explore the extensive grounds and, as afternoon tea was booked for us at the nearby Whitmore Tea Rooms and we had had such an extended visit, we ran out of time to visit the Stables next to the Hall. Another time perhaps!
Everyone seemed to be of the opinion that it was a very agreeable way to spend a miserably-wet afternoon at the height of an English summer.
