Audlem Online has been sent a wonderful piece of imaginative writing by a 7-year old with very strong Audlem connections.

Eve Canovan's writing has already been published in the national and local press, The Times and a local newspaper, the Lancaster Guardian. Her mother, Cherry, was brought up in Audlem and she and her parents lived in Moorsfield Avenue for many years.

Streaky named by Eve Canovan, aged 7 from Lancaster

A cloud of gas hung where our story starts. A star was being born. Pop! Out came a star. At the same moment a star exploded -- the end of the life of that star.

Whoosh! Streaky the asteroid crashed at the side of the Moon, making a huge crater. The baby star jumped in shock. "Oops, sorry. I love making craters," said Streaky.

Down on Earth, there was a greedy scientist who wanted to take over the Universe. He needed a thing to see through. He invented the telescope. Well, that's what he called it. He said to himself: "I am a genius. I invented this in the 17th century.

"Aha, an asteroid. That will do. I'll capture it, then I'll say I have shrunk the Moon."

"Oh no," Streaky thought. "I can't get out of this cage."

You see, the scientist had captured him and had told everyone he had shrunk the Moon. You'd think no one would believe it because the Moon would shine, but he had mixed a potion to make the sky always be foggy at night. Always.

It was night-time, and the baby star burned the electric wires so that there would be a blackout. Then, when the workmen were fixing them, the baby star got hot and burned the fog away, and the scientists saw the Moon.

"The Moon's escaped!" they cried. Then they saw Streaky still in his cage. "We've been tricked!"

All the scientists were maddened with rage. In fact, as hot as a volcano, with smoke coming out of their ears! For revenge, they made the greedy scientist become a tour guide. "Ha! He'll have to be nice now."

Streaky was set free and played with the baby star. He showed him how to make craters, and the baby star showed him how to flash.

Cherry Canovan writes: "I lived in Audlem from 1978 – 2003 when my parents retired to Scotland. I attended Audlem primary from 1978-1983, then Brine Leas and Danebank.

My mum was a professor of politics at Keele and my dad an artist/carpenter who sold pieces such as painted and carved cupboards in local shops. I went into journalism after university but am now working as a physicist at Lancaster University.

I still have close friends from Audlem including Marianne Tilling, Colin Foster, Dafydd Davies and Ritchie Kay. We all meet regularly (well, not so much Ritchie, as he lives in Germany), often in Audlem where we take the next generation to the swings!

I've been married to my husband Ray for 10 years; we have Eve (7) and Lawrie (4) and we live in Lancaster.
