Irene Cunliffe reports: "Audlem WI went all out to celebrate their 90th Birthday in style on the afternoon of 5th March. It was open to the public and invited members of neighbouring institutes and took the form of an exhibition of artefacts and memorabilia with photographs and writings covering the past nine decades.

"Amongst these were the prized rose bowl won by the drama group, the domino shield won this year by Mary Cleaver and the two hand embroidered tablecloths dating back over thirty years.

"The evening started with high tea and guests included federation chairman, Margery Hall and ex-chairman, Christine Bailey. Beryl Gribbin baked a special birthday cake which was sampled with Bucks Fizz afterwards. The ladies of the committee dressed up to depict various decades including the Land Girls, twenties flappers, pre-war thirties and forties new look.

"The evening went on with light-hearted memories of the WI days from Joan Vernon, Margaret Thornton, Pat Jones, Ann Pearce, Alma Laurence and Jean Cadman which was followed by a spot of humorous entertainment and ended with a communal sing-song of music from each decade."
