The annual ADAPT community apple pressing is to take place at the Buttermarket in the near future Saturday October 1st. This provides a great opportunity to convert excess apples and windfalls into a very palatable drink.

But do you know the name of the variety of apple (s) in your garden. If you wish to find out, there is a comparatively easy and nonexpensive way to find out.

Brogdale Collections in Kent provide an identification service. Brogdale is a charity maintained by Reading University founded after thewar with huge support from the present King. It contains over 4000cultivars on 150 acres of two of every recorded apple, pear, plum and soft fruit. Their website is easy to access www.Brogdalecollections.

Along the top banner is a section entitled Fruit identification click on that and it immediately takes you to how to present your samples with an easy to complete submission form. If you . Cost per apple is around £30 and the results will take about 6-8 weeks to arrive.

Please be sure to complete the submission form fully and comply with the samples as indicated.

Already here in Audlem we have identified a heritage variety Catface introduced in mid 1800s and widely grown in Staffordshire and Cheshire and a French cultivar introduced in the 1700s
