One of the delights of the 'Mend our Mum' discussions taking place in Audlem's watering holes currently, is discovering the previously unknown, indeed un-sung, talent of some local characters.

AudlemOnline has heard of one such who performed in a night club cabaret act called 'The Three Dimensions' back in the 1960s.

The group were regulars in London's West End at the Negresco Night Club in Brook Street, The Rehearsal Room in Sloane Square (the act just before Bill Oddie) and notoriously at The Blue Angel where the audience used to shout "Get 'em off" – as they were the act preceding the stripper!

The group's agent was a Greek cockney who once booked them as the cabaret at the Scotland Yard Ladies Night at the London Ritz Hotel in 1966. He told The Three Dimensions' members that he couldn't be there himself, but told them to be ready to perform at midnight. "Any problems, don't ring me, ring Whitehall one two one two."

The last song in the cabaret at this Ladies Night was 'The Pride of the Purley Police Force' and was written by Michael (Willy) Williamson.

It's a wonderful, witty piece but we fear that reproducing the lyrics today will cause such offence amongst the more sensitively minded that we dare not (unless overwhelming demand forces us to change our mind!). Curiously, the good ladies of Scotland Yard took it all in their stride back in that more free and easy age.

One of The Three Dimensions has lived in Audlem since 1969 but for the sake of modesty (and the avoidance of ridicule), he wishes to remain anonymous. We will leave you guessing!

Assiduous research has produced our photo of dancers at a club in the 1960s, doubtless dancing to the music of The Three Dimensions.
