There's a treat in store on the canal this weekend for all cheese lovers with the Cheese Boat offering samples and a chance to buy some fine Welsh cheeses. The boat is moored near to the Mill at the Wharf.

With 660 cheeses on board, there's plenty to go around. The range includes seven Snowdonia cheeses ranging from The Little Black Bomber, an extra mature Cheddar to a hot little number called Red Devil, a red Leicester flavoured with chillies and crushed pepper. Green Thunder is an interesting mature Cheddar with garlic and garden herbs while a real favourite is Bouncing Berry, a mature white Cheddar with cranberries – the savoury and fruit flavours really do complement each other well.

Whisky enthusiasts will be taken by Amber Mist. Finally, and it really does have a pronounced onion flavour, there's Pickle Power, a mature cheddar with pickled onion.

If you are wary of some of those flavours, all can be sampled before purchase and you may well be very pleasantly surprised. The Cheese Boat is also selling two organic cheeses from Cardigan, a blue veined cheese called Perl Las and a soft cheese made from cows' milk called Perl Wen.

The Cheese Boat travels around the canal network and this year has been as far as Banbury on the Oxford canal, taking in many places in the Midlands. After Audlem it is heading for the Llangollen canal with stops in Maesbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch for their boat rallies.
