(The website link that was here no longer works) If today you spot any of the women of the village performing 'undulating movements of the belly' or 'rapid gyrations of the hips', you can be pretty sure they're members of the WI. On Thursday evening, your reporter was in serious conversation in the Methodist Church, when he encountered unusual sights and sounds. From across the hall, where the WI was meeting, came strange music, excitable yodelling, and glimpses of veils and scantily-clad women. (To be honest, there was only one scantily-clad woman. The members of the WI all appeared to be fully clothed.)

Is this how the WI makes jam? Have they changed the tune to Jerusalem? No. The members of the WI were simply enjoying a belly dancing demonstration – and enjoying it they certainly were. So if today you spot some unexpected wobbling from WI members, they're obviously still in the mood – and may need to be asked to sit down! (Is the Women's Institute open to men?)
