Local link to unexploded bomb in Bath

With the news that hundreds have been evacuated from their homes in Bath, local resident Celia Bloor has sent us this message:

"It may be of interest to know that I went to the school where this bomb was found, under the gym, from the photos!

"I said only the other day when we discussing how towns like Portsmouth and Bristol were in the fifties with waste areas full of buddleia that in my school grounds there was a pond with newts which we always called the 'bomb crater' and thought
nothing of it!

"Hoping it is removed safely there is lovely Lansdown Crescent only yards away."

A 300-metre exclusion zone was set up following the discovery at the Royal High School in Lansdown Road in Bath on Thursday afternoon.

Contractors unearthed the 500lb Second World War shell from beneath the surface of the school's playground, which had been in use until few years ago, and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called to the site.

People living in up to 1,000 homes nearby were evacuated throughout the night and during the early hours of Friday morning.
