Shoppers and visitors in Audlem village centre yesterday morning were bemused to hear a series of loud crashing noises and then find that a large grey cylindrically shaped object had landed outside the Lord Combermere's car park.

Was it part of a redundant satellite returning to earth, was an immmediate thought? After all, it had seemed to fly through the air before its crash landing. The answer, however, soon proved a little more down to earth as the identifying clues were assembled – a dog running madly round the corner up Cheshire Street; a frantic dog owner picking up a part of a dog lead near the grey cylinder, and then the Co-op's shiny new hi-tech rubbish bin seeming to have lost its large lid.

So, it's clearly not a good idea to tie your pooch's lead to the bin while in the shop, despite its very solid appearance – unless you want a similar crash, bang, wallop when the dog bolts and more startled shoppers fearing the Martians have landed in Audlem.
