Audlem's traders are urging villagers to sign the petition against Government plans to scrap the Post Office card account. The Government announced earlier this year that it will no longer fund the accounts, used to pay pensions and benefits, claiming that better options are available.

A spokesman on behalf of the traders said "There is a petition form in Audlem Post Office. Scrapping the accounts would have a dramatic impact on the viability of the Post Office network in urban and rural areas as it would lead to the withdrawal of many services.

The petition is an important part of the campaign to support businesses providing a vital service to Audlem. The petition urges the Government to reverse its announcement and halt immediately its activities designed to kill the account off in advance of 2010.

"If you want Audlem to keep its post office and haven't yet signed the petition, please do so."
