Keith Simpson enquired on Audlem Online if anyone had any photos of the Toll House at Audlem. He said:

Whilst doing some research for my wife's family tree. I came across an entry in the 1841 census showing that my wife's Great Great Grandmother was born in the Toll House at Audlem. Her Name was Somerville Young, parents were John Young and Emma Young.

I then visited your web site and found that the Toll House was demolished in 1947. My question relates to the possibility that there may be some photographic evidence available for the building.

A number of people contacted Audlem Online and we passed on the messages. Keith has now updated us, as follows:

I have had two people contact me about the Toll House in Audlem which was really good. I regret to say that it is not the Toll House where my wife's ancestors lived but the Lock House.

This would make sense as in 1841 John Young is shown as a Wharfinger (1841), Canal Inspector (1851), Lock Keeper (1861) according to the census returns

As you are aware census returns are sometimes very difficult to read and it was only after I had enlarged the census and had a second look that I realised that I had made a mistake.

Once again thank you for your help and please pass on my thanks to all your readers.
