Towpath Talk, the No 1 Free Waterways Newspaper, is running a Competition called 'Volunteer of the Year'. Rodney Cottrell, who many of you will know is a local resident, has been nominated as one of the four finalists for this prestigious award.

For the past five years Rodney has worked tirelessly to set up the Audlem Lass Boat Service which has carried over 20,000 people between Overwater Marina and Audlem village, raising well needed funds for the RNLI.

In addition, he has raised funds to establish the Overwater Wheelyboat, Maughan Lass, which enables wheelchair users and those with mobility difficulties to have the opportunity for trips on the Shropshire Union Canal and around the Marina.

Rodney managed to raise over £20,000 for the Wheelyboat which began its service at the end of July and has already carried over 300 passengers, many of whom were able to experience travelling on water for the first time.

All of this is achieved, of course, with the support of Overwater Marina, and the invaluable support of local volunteers who operate the boats – but without Rodney as the driving force these facilities may not have come to be.

We have the opportunity to vote for Rodney. The full article about this can be found the latest edition of Towpath Talk which is available from various locations around the village, and at Overwater Marina, and gives details of all four finalists and how to vote.
