Today is the first day of the new football season, and it seems appropriate that the thought for today should be Liverpool manager (1959-1974) Bill Shankly's famous quote....

"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."
