With everyone roaring Great Britain's Olympic stars on, one local household has been even more excited than most.

Ruth Cliffe of Audlem has seen her Grandson, Dan Fox, not only playing hockey for Great Britain this week but scoring against Argentina in his team's 4 – 1 victory, his first international goal.

A defender, he was not expected to score, yet slotted home the third goal in a convincing victory against the Argentinians and also played in the 2 – 2 draw with South Africa.

Dan plays club hockey for Hampstead & Westminster and, since making his international debut in 2009, has notched up 40 caps and also has a silver medal from the 2010 Champions Trophy in Mönchengladbach.

When Dan isn’t playing hockey he is also a very good cricketer. In 2004 he scored 104 for Oxford in the Varsity match and boasts a higher first class average (73.75) than West Indies legend Brian Lara (51.88).

Dan studied Geography at Oxford University and is now a teacher, working at Cranleigh School. He lives with his other half, Jeni who is also a teacher, in Godalming in Surrey.

His mother and Ruth Cliffe's daughter, Carolyn, attended Nantwich Grammar School (now Malbank) and met her husband- to- be on a hockey tour so Dan has the game in his blood.

The excitement has not just been on the pitch, Ruth told Audlem Online last night. Dan was also asked to show the Queen around his apartment in the Olympic Village on Saturday – that must have been quite a tidy-up beforehand.

And how's this for a Tweet by Dan earlier this week: "Swimming, massage, ice bath, four meals and having the future king over today."

And if meeting Her Majesty and Prince William wasn't enough, he has also appeared on Breakfast TV.

Hardly surprising, therefore, that Ruth Cliffe is so immensely proud of her Grandson's achievements. She, with four generations of her family, will be cheering him and the team on as, hopefully, they progress towards the medals.
