The Audlem Wildlife and Ecology Group (AWEG) have arranged for several nest boxes specifically designed for swifts to be placed in Audlem Cemetery.
Swifts are migratory birds and are wonderful flyers, they feed, mate and sleep on the wing. Unfortunately, however, their numbers are now seriously decreasing, it is estimated that the UK breeding population fell by 51% between 1995 and 2015, and it is thought that the primary reason for this is a lack of suitable nesting sites.
We know that a few swifts do appear in the Audlem area on their spring return from Africa and we hope that this initiative will encourage more to breed in this locality.
The original idea was that the group had hoped that nesting areas could be incorporated within the new village hall annexe, but unfortunately we were too late for this to be included within the design. After some discussion Audlem Burial Board was approached and they very kindly agreed that we could site the nest boxes within the cemetery.
We are also very grateful to Rick Youle, of R. H. Youle Building Services, who freely gave up his time on a bitterly cold Saturday to site the nest boxes.
