Why do people work in care?

Or maybe the question at the moment should be – why don’t people work in care?

With the impact of Covid hitting all industries hard the health and social care sector has certainly felt the blows. You will have seen many news report about the difficulties all care staff have faced and sadly some people have left the care sector and recruitment is now one of the biggest challenges we face.

People in the community still need care – every day of the year and at SureCare we are providing care to as many people as we can. But we know that there are more people that need our service and without increasing our staffing levels we are unable to help further.

Many people in Audlem will see our familiar purple tunics and smiley faces and lots of villagers say hello and ask what the team are doing today. Working in care is incredibly rewarding but can also be incredibly hard work and we support our team through ongoing training and learning to equip them with the skills needed to fully support our clients.

We offer competitive rates of pay and other benefits, flexible rotas, ongoing training, career development and support from our management team. If you have wondered what it’s like to work for SureCare, read on from some of our team members.

Jo Douglas joined our team having never had any experience in care and like many of our team that were new to care she has taken to it so well as she is naturally caring and wants to do the best she can for our clients. This is what Jo said: “I started working at SureCare just before Christmas, this has been my first care working job. I absolutely love it, the training was very informative. The management are always on hand to help with any questions or queries I have. The other staff are so helpful and friendly I feel like I have known them for years. The hours are amazing and work well around my children. Would recommend anyone thinking of going into care to go to SureCare.”

Sarah Castelow joined us as a care assistant and has consistently demonstrated outstanding care with our clients, has come up with ideas on how to improve care for clients and has recently been promoted to a senior role. Being able to allow our team members the opportunity to grow with us, train in different areas of care and continue their career with us in senior positions is very important. We will always encourage those who wish to complete more training and gain their NVQs. When talking about her career at SureCare Sarah said: “I have worked at SureCare for over a year now and I would say it’s the best company I have worked for. The support you receive from management is amazing, you never feel like you are working on your own and they provide brilliant opportunities for you to progress in your career and learn more through training courses. The best thing about the team is that we truly care about the clients and are dedicated to making their lives as easy as possible. Everyone deserves to be cared for with dignity and respect and this is what I believe as a team we achieve.”

Sarah is pictured with one of our clients – Wyn and is helping her to choose some new spring clothing. When talking about the support she receives Wyn said: “Care means everything to me, especially when it is the right care. I was naturally nervous about inviting strangers into my home but the team at SureCare have always been professional and kind and they always introduce a new carer to me. I need to take medication everyday but the best medication I receive is from my carers talking to me every day. I trust my carers and look forward to their visits”.

Tina Jones and Kirstie Hercules established SureCare Central Cheshire in February 2019, shortly before the pandemic began. Kirstie said: “We are incredibly proud of how well our team worked through the pandemic, there isn’t anything that stops them – pandemic, storms, floods, they always ensure our clients receive all of their calls, every day of the year.”

Despite the challenges that face home care providers the team at SureCare Central Cheshire have been awarded the Top 20 Home Care Provider award in both 2020 and 2021, awarded by homecare.co.uk which recognises 20 of the top-rated Home Care Providers in each region of the UK based on reviews from service users/clients and their family/friends. It is these reviews which show the high-quality care provided by the team.

Tina and Kirstie were eagerly awaiting their first CQC inspection which, like many things, was delayed due to Covid. When they did receive their first inspection they were rated as Good overall and rated as Outstanding in Caring. When talking about the rating Tina said: “We could see that we were achieving our aims of high-quality care for our clients from their comments and seeing our team going above and beyond to keep people safe and well and leaving them with a smile on their face. But we wanted to have an inspection to look where we could make more improvements. To receive Outstanding in the caring section was a huge boost to us and our team. Now that we are seeing a future beyond Covid we want to achieve Outstanding in all of the other rating areas and provide links from our clients homes to their communities and to continually drive up the quality of care that we and our team provide.”

If you would like to join our incredible care team you can apply online through our website. You can also read the homecare reviews and CQC report from our website https://www.surecare.co.uk/central-cheshire/
