AUDLEM SAINTS 1 STAPELEY GUNNERS 0

A grey and wet day at Shavington saw the Saints go top of the League with what was a very hard won victory. For much of the game it wasn't as pretty as it has been but the effort from both teams and the tackling and blocking was exemplary. At the end of the first period neither goalkeeper had had to make any sort of save at all. The nearest either side came was when the Saints were awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area but then failed to get a shot in.

Both sides then switched players about and the second period resulted in more sustained Gunners pressure with several corners in one short spell and one long range shot which went just wide. The Saints goalkeeper held onto the corners when they came his way and with good defending again in evidence we went into the third period all square.

The Saints continued to work hard but getting forward with real venom was difficult to start with although we were finally trying to shoot from further out and, given the wet conditions, that did make it more difficult for the Gunners' goalkeeper. The Gunners came close from a corner when a really well hit volley going wide and we were put under a bit of pressure again.

With just a few minutes to go the part time managerial team in place on the day made a substitution. Within a minute the substitute produced a really mazy little run and managed to beat 3 defenders in very quick succession and then fire a low left footed shot across the goal and into the bottom corner. We then had a couple more half chances as the Gunners pressed even harder but they couldn't manage to get a direct shot at goal.

The boys can be rightly proud of this performance and the fact that none of our goalkeepers had a difficult save to make at all is testament to the ever improving tackling and defensive commitment.
