Wasps having taken up residence in the roof of our bay window, I did exactly what I had done on a previous occasion and contacted our council environmental health department.

These good people, and they are very good at what they do, have on three occasions over 26 years helped us with mice, rats and wasps respectively. This was, and I stress the word was, a service provided for residents, who pay towards the council via council tax, and it was free as far as I remember. We have after all paid our taxes.

I very nearly screeched when a £50 up front fee was demanded if I wished to use the service. I have no complaints about any of the people with whom I dealt, they were to a man ( and woman) polite and friendly but am I alone in feeling that this was a stinging charge.

On the plus side there is now one fewer wasps' nest in the vicinity, and marginally fewer wasps. The chap in charge of extermination was efficient, quick and very, very cheerful. I must buzz off to avoid the survivors!

Resident of Stafford Street.
