Smelly drains complaints

A number of Audlem residents have complained this morning about the foul smells coming from drains in the village centre near to the Co-operatve food store and Fire Station.

This has been a long-standing problem and, according to one resident who lives nearby, now getting much worse.

It is now four years since United Utilities sent an information caravan for a day which was parked on the Lord Combermere car park. The purpose: to explain to residents the work that was planned to replace the sewers around the Fire Station which have sunk on a number of occasions.

That work was due to take place within a couple of months of the caravan's visit. But, as yet, nothing has happened.

Does anyone know more? Rumour has it that the sewer connection from the Moseley's Yard development by Müller Homes was never completed as originally planned and that failure has never been subject to an Enforcement Order by Cheshire East Council who approved the development.

Judging by the smells today and the local residents' complaints, the sewers need attention – and fast.

Update at 2.20pm: An Audlem Parish Councillor has contacted Audlem Online to say that he has called United Utilities about the drains today as this is a potential health hazard. United Utilities have said they will be inspecting the drains within 48 hours.
