Short ARS Saturday 25th November 2023

led by Jeanette Shenton.
Meet in Audlem Car Park to depart at 9am.

This is a 5 mile 2 booter walk, starting at Apedale Heritage Centre off Loomer Road (ST5 7LB) with 171 metres height gain. There are toilets and a cafe at the centre which do not open till 10am.

If the gates to the park are open (This depends on volunteers) there is ample free car parking by the Heritage Centre. If the gates are not open there is street parking at the entrance on Loomer Road.

On the walk we will have some great views and fascinating industrial and geological landscapes. Passing Apedale outcrop, standing in the mouth of Apedale volcano, a restored chimney and a mining memorial giving views as far as the Roaches and Cannock Chase.

From the centre there are tours of the disused mine workings available and a small mining museum, next door is the Apedale valley light railway (A 2.0 gauge railway operated by the Moseley Railway trust) for anyone wanting to explore further after the walk.

Description:

The paths from the centre and around the perimeter of the park are generally good with more uneven paths passing through woodland and a stretch of 50 metres steep climb out of the woodland. Poles would be useful.

There are only 2 stiles and the walk is dog friendly

NB All walkers must have suitable footwear and be prepared for adverse weather, carry food and water to last for the entire walk and be suitably fit for the various lengths of walk.

Each walk is led by a nominated leader who will carry some first-aid equipment. The leader has the right to refuse to include in a group anyone who is felt not be adequately equipped.

Non-members of Audlem Rambling Society (ARS) are welcome to come on a walk but are expected to join ARS and pay the membership fee after a trial walk or two.
