With the new Audlem Saints Under 9s football season kicking off on Sunday morning, the coach was early to bed on Saturday night. Not so his players, many rumoured to be dancing till well past 11 o'clock at the Chilli night!

The preparation was obviously spot on, though, as the boys kicked off with a 4-0 victory. Playing on the fantastic new surface at Shavington soccer centre, the opposition was provided by Wistaston Cubs. The new surface is much longer artificial grass than the old pitch and it took a little bit of getting used to. Passes needed to be firmer and more accurate. Once settled down, Audlem played some quite wonderful football.

The first goal, scored by a player making his debut, was the result of no less than 5 swift passes and a neat finish – just like watching Brazil! The second goal was equally eyecatching, but was very different. Latching on to a loose ball at the very corner of the box, the young Audlem left winger smashed the ball hard and high into the far corner of the net. Even the referee shook the player's hand! Two further goals were added late, each the result of fluid, passing moves. In both cases, the final ball into the box required vision and not a little skill to actually pick out the free player.

Audlem have won a lot of games, but rarely can they have played so well...solid defending, splendid passing, neat finishing and teamwork of the highest order.....and all that after going out on the cola & chilli the night before! By the way, the boys verdict on the game was "wicked" – and, on the Chilli event, was "well wicked!"
