With tension rising between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, a local resident, Peter Oxley, who knows his aircraft, has sent us the following report a few minutes ago:

"I know things are getting serious in Ukraine but there was no need for the Russians to launch an air strike at this stage!

"We have just been buzzed by a Yak 11 in Russian military colours! This one, in fact, in the photo.

"Whatever next? Migs over Audlem? (Gulp!)"

The plane flew low over the Moorsfield Avenue area just before 4.00pm and was heard by your reporter who, unfortunately, would be hard pressed to distinguish a Yak 11 from a Boeing 747. Our grateful thanks, therefore, to Peter for his identification of the very low-flying aircraft.

And while our top photo is taken from an internet site promoting the plane in question, our second photo was taken this afternoon by David Pudney in Audlem who has kindly forwarded the shot to us.
