My name is Nigel Pearson and I co-ordinate a reading competition for young people aged 11 -- 18 years on behalf of the Prayer Book Society. Click here for more detail

The aim of the competition is to introduce the young people to the language of the Prayer Book and to encourage the skill of reading aloud with fluency, enjoyment, expression and confidence.

There is a panel of 3 judges, which this year includes Ian Bishop, Archdeacon of Macclesfield

The young people compete in two age groups; 11 -- 14 and 15 -- 18. Each competitor will receive a signed certificate of participation and a small medallion. Prize

money is given in age each category -- First -- £50; Second -- £25; Third -- £10

The overall winner of each age group is also invited to represent the Diocese of Chester at the National Final.

This year's competition for the Diocese of Chester will be held in the church of St Mary, Nantwich during the afternoon of Saturday, 12th January 2019 beginning at 2pm and will be followed by coffee in the church meeting room.

The young people can choose either two Psalms, or a Collect, Epistle and Gospel or a short section from one of the services in the 1662 Anglican Book of Common Prayer, such as the Magnificat or the introduction to the service of marriage. No other versions please and contact Nigel Pearson if you require clarification. The piece does not have to be read from memory in the local heat and competitors can type out their pieces to facilitate easier reading from larger print if they wish.

If you might have young readers who are interested in entering please email back with name, age and which passages they will be reading. All children must be accompanied by a parent on the day of the competition.

Any questions please email back or call Nigel Pearson on 07974 764610

Best wishes
