‘I am writing to provide an update on the ongoing situation at Baddington Lane Bridge, which carries the A530 over the dismantled Nantwich–Market Drayton railway line.
Following the recent options study assessing how best to address both the bridge’s structural issues and the adjoining embankment slip, ecological surveys and a full topographical survey have now been completed.
Further ground investigations are scheduled to begin in August 2026. These will include assessment of the embankment and surrounding area, along with intrusive ground investigations to better understand the underlying conditions. The findings from these investigations will inform the most appropriate design and scope of the works.
Given the complexity of the issues and the scale of investigative work required, it remains too early to confirm a definitive timeframe for reopening the route to vehicles over 7.5 tonnes. Subject to the outcomes of the investigations and subsequent design development, we are currently aiming to begin works in spring 2027. However, timescales may change depending on what is identified during the investigations and any measures required in response.
We will continue to keep you updated as the project progresses.
