As promised, here are the answers to yesterday's Italian Quiz:

1. Which is the longest river in Italy?
2. When Italy reunited as one state in the 1860s, which was its first capital city?
3. Which is the largest Italian city that hasn't had its name changed in English, such as Roma becoming Rome?
4. Two independent countries are entirely surrounded by Italy. The Vatican City and which other?
5. Which Italian city is home to Europe's oldest university?
6. A poor southern province lies between Puglia in the east and Calabria in the west. What is it?
7. Which city is home to the Ponte Vecchio?
8. Which city is home to the football club Sampdoria?
9. In which city is the aperitif Campari made?
10. We eat Spaghetti Bolognese – the locals in Bologna eat their Ragu sauce with which pasta?

Answers

1. The Po, 405 miles long.
2. Turin, or Torino as it's called in Italy, from 1861 – 65. Florence was briefly capital from 1865 until Rome became part of Italy in 1870 when the 'Eternal City' became capital.
3. Bari in Puglia followed by Palermo in Sicily. As well as Roma becoming Rome, Napoli (Naples), Milano (Milan), Torino (Turin), Venezia (Venice), Firenze (Florence) and many others have an English version of their name. Bari and Palermo somehow escaped translation.
4. San Marino.
5. Bologna – another that escaped being translated in English.
6, Basilicata.
7. Florence
8. Genoa
9. It is made in a suburb of Milan, Italy's largest city.
10. Tagliatelle, a flat pasta always freshly made rather than dried Spaghetti which largely comes from the South. According to Rick Stein, the length and width of Tagliatelle is made in the same proportions as Bologna's old tower, the 97m high Asinelli Tower.
