SOLAR ENERGY:  FROM SUN  TO KETTLE

Audlem Probus Club have a truly hot topic – in more ways than one – scheduled for this week’s talk.

Who isn’t worried about the cost of fuel and energy, given the current global conflicts? The ecological and financial benefits of harvesting solar energy have been known for many years, but can the Sun really provide all that we need globally – summer and winter?

According to George King, a professor of physics: “Just one hour of sunshine can generate as much energy as the whole of civilization uses in one year.”

George, the Liverpool-born son of a fishmonger, chose science instead of fish-mongering. He gained a BSc and PhD in physics at Manchester University, eventually becoming a professor of physics there, and is now Emeritus Professor of Physics, still teaching the undergraduate students.

His presentation for Audlem Probus Club’s retired business men and women this Thursday (May14th) addresses solar energy from its birth in the centre of the Sun through its journey to Earth.

He says: “We have the job of harvesting this renewable energy as effectively and efficiently as possible, and harnessing it by various technologies. This involves a wide range of physical principles, from nuclear fusion to radiation physics and thermodynamics.”

George will also describe ways in which solar energy is stored when the Sun isn’t shining.

Guests and visitors are welcome to join us for George’s talk:

“Solar Energy and its journey from the centre of the Sun to your electric kettle” (Thurs May 14) Audlem Public Hall, from 10am.
