The problems with SatNav

Many residents along Stafford Street and the Woore Road have been enjoying the quiet with the A525 closed to traffic on the Shropshire side of the border for about four weeks. The absence of long-distance HGVs has been particularly welcome.

This doesn't mean to say some trucks don't ignore all the diversion signs. A resident tells the story of one very large truck that continued along the road eastwards through Audlem before stopping to ask directions to Crewe.

It transpired that the truck had travelled from Shrewsbury with Crewe its final destination. When asked why the vehicle was heading towards Buerton on the A525, and with the road closed too, the driver's response was he was following the SatNav's directions.

A glance at the map will immediately raise questions about the route, questions the driver must also have been asking as he had to swing into reverse and, we are told, very skilfully managed an about turn with the help of a farm gate, presumably with the SatNav voice totally confused.
