The Eiffel Tower was built to be the entrance to the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. Construction was started by Gustave Eiffel's company in January 1887 and officially opened on March 31st 1889.

It was the tallest structure in the world until the Chrysler Building was built in New York in 1930. Today it is the most visited paid-for monument in the world with over 6 million making the journey to one of it's three viewing levels.

There was considerable opposition to the construction of the Tower from many in France's artistic community, and it was said that Guy de Maupassant ate lunch in the tower's restaurant every day because it was the one place in Paris where the tower was not visible.
