On bike across Costa Rica

On your bike..... In November this year myself, along with 33 of my colleagues will be cycling coast to coast across Costa Rica in 7 days to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society.

The challenge ... cycle 500km in 7 days....in 32 degree heat....on dirt tracks....around volcanoes...and worst of all I have to camp (I'm not a massive fan of camping it has to be said). Coming from Cheshire I can't say I'm use to a hill let alone a volcano!

The motivation

The money we raise will go towards funding the first Alzheimer's national support programme 'Live Well'. This pioneering campaign will provide life-changing support for people living with dementia, their families and carers.

I've seen first-hand how devastating dementia can be not only on the quality of life for sufferer but on their family and friends. The idea of a programme that would offer support that doesn't currently exist in the NHS sounds pretty fantastic.

The Facts and Figures

There are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2021. This will soar to 1.7 million by 2050. Dementia is one of the main causes of disability in later in life, ahead of cancer, cardiovascular disease and stroke. As a country we spend much less on dementia than on these other conditions.

Unpaid carers supporting someone with dementia save the economy £8 billion a year.

Challenge

I do love a challenge and this is certainly a pretty big one! If you know me well you'll know that come hell or high water (as the saying goes) I'll drag myself across that country probably on my hands and knees by day three, I'm that stubborn determined.

Your help

Over the next few months I aim to raise at least £4,000. That seems like a massive sum right now, but I've already had a number of wonderful donations.
