Olympics role for Audlem?

The news that Lord Coe was in South Cheshire yesterday discussing possible roles for the area for the 2012 Olympics has set the rumour mill going – particularly as he was to meet a representative from Audlem during his visit.

With Lord Coe's colleague, the Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell, announcing at the end of the spectacular Beijing Games that London's Olympics would be the 'On-budget Games', could ASET, the Audlem Special Events Team, be part of that equation?

After all, ASET almost certainly has a better record than any London organisation in staging events within budget, and pretty tight ones at that. Perhaps it could be the Opening Ceremony? Or, more likely, the Closing Ceremony, where fireworks are always a feature – an area of special local expertise!

There has been no confirmation whatsoever of these rumours. Everyone, including the Audlem representative, is keeping their thoughts to themselves. But, given the village's success in getting the national prescription debate onto the political agenda yesterday (see BBC1 TV story today), helping deliver the 'On-budget Olympics' would be yet another local coup.
