Peter and Janet Morgan's visit to Christchurch Cathedral in New Zealand at the precise moment the devastating earthquake struck that city covers the front page of the Nantwich Chronicle, out now at 77p at Williams' newsagents.

The escape of the Audlem couple, first reported last week on Audlem Online, is all the more remarkable after they made a spur of the moment decision to go into the gift shop before going up the spire.

The spire collapsed into a heap of rubble but the gift shop, a relatively new building with a steel frame, survived the severe tremors, albeit the Morgans were flung to the ground and took shelter under a table until the tremors stopped.

Peter and Jan have since appeared in the New Zealand press after helping a trapped woman in the earthquake disaster, the Chronicle reports. They also comforted youngsters looking for their friends, reported New Zealand newspaper, the Marlborough Express.
