I read with interest yesterday morning, your article on wildlife in the Audlem area and particularly birds.

There is a story in my family that my grandparents heard Nightingales at Hankelow Mill many years ago.

I understand that this country does have Nightingales, but in the south of the country and that they do not come this far north.

Has anyone any information on nightingales in this area in the early 1900s?

Editor adds: Nightingales are normally thought to be present as far north as Worcestershire. Other species, however, once restricted to the far south, such as Dartford Warblers, are moving northwards and are now said to be on Cannock Chase.
