The tradition of a burst of a wonderful display of exploding rockets over the Square as the clock strikes Midnight on the last day of the year was broken on Sunday when they did not happen.

The three bodies who had funded the happening over the years had pulled out.

We began this practice back in 1999 when, I, as Chairman of the Millennium committee and my fellow members set in train the plan to welcome the New Millennium with a colourful and exploding display in the night sky. The whole event was so popular, with the Square packed with hundreds of Villagers,.many in Fancy dress. We then decided that we would continue to mark this date with our own Mini Sidney Display, and it has been very welcome over the past 18 years.

Following the non-event this week, I am seeking to re-introduce it for December 31st 2018. To mark the last New Years Eve we will have, if all the planning stays as it is, as members of the EU community. Leaving – 'for better or for worse', an adventure into the unknown.

I wish to appeal to all for help with raising the Funds needed and I am pleased to say that I have already, over the past couple of days, obtained £500 from individual people towards the fee from The Blitz Firework Company.

Please do come back to me with a pledge to help me in this plan. Big or small -- all will be very gratefully received.

At this moment, all I need is your pledge.

With a hope that we will succeed in this.
