This week's Chronicle reports that a leaked letter suggests the Government is keen to abolish district authorities like Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council and replace them with 'super-councils'. While Government representatives were listening this week to the views of council leaders on how local government should be re-organised in 2008, a letter from the Minister of Communities and Local Government, David Miliband, to Deputy Prime Minister John Pescott, indicates the Government very much has its own ideas. The letter seems to suggest that 'bigger is best' and that the super-councils envisaged should be unitary authorities with the functions of both the current district and county councils. The Chronicle speculates that a possible outcome will be two councils in Cheshire serving West Cheshire and East Cheshire respectively.
