Audlem 2nd XI wound up their season with a narrow six run defeat to local rivals Sandbach on Saturday.

Skipper Toby Banfield lost the toss and was asked to field. The main stumbling block to Audlem's progress was a stubborn third-wicket partnership of 58 runs between John.Taylor (56) and Steve.Stoneley (32) which proved crucial in a tight game. Audlem did manage to dismiss their opponents for a relatively modest total of 163 in 46 overs with the ever-dependable Roy Wild finishing his campaign bowling with figures of 2 for off 21 overs. Ron Lawson 2 for 34, Paul Ratcliffe 1 for 35 and Greg Fallows 3 for 34 were the other wicket takers.

Audlem's batsmen were never at their best in the ensuing run chase but got agonisingly close to their target when the last wicket fell just six runs short. Paul Thorburn top scored with a fine 32.

Audlem finished their campaign in a respectable fifth position in Division 5 and will prepare this winter to assemble a squad capable of pushing for promotion next season.
