This may be too late for National Poetry Day,( 3rd October) but I thought readers
may like to read one of my recent poems. We are on their flight path!

SKEIN

First, the sound, urgent; a 'buzz' in the far distance,
A skein of excited birds approaches in the morning air,
Flying between rooftops and the blue of a sunrise sky,
Heralding the transition into Autumn.
A wedge of wild Canadian Geese,
Arctic confrontational herbivores,
Airborne, like fighter pilots.
A plump of honking back-seat-drivers,
Noisily directing the trip to water,
Lush green grasses and journey's end.
Moments of calm descend as the team departs,
Until the next arrow of loud anxious waterfowl
Pierces the quiet of early morning.

Ann Jones.
