The Times newspaper reported yesterday how a number of MPS had told the Commons about the deaths of their infant children as they urged improvements to bereavement suites in maternity units.

Local MP Antoinette Sandbach held back tears as she recalled losing her son to sudden infant death syndrome and her experience at the hospital and during the routine police investigation that followed.

"I woke to find him not breathing," she said. "Arriving at hospital, looking at a flat line in the ambulance for over 20 minutes, a crash team was waiting for me but it was too late."

Ms Sandbach, the MP for Eddisbury, said the Chrysalis Trust organised counselling at the Alder Centre, at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, which was a "lifeline."

Other MPs spoke about their experiences and Health Minister Ben Gummer vowed to improve care for grieving parents.
