More than a Hillfort

#Oswestry Hillfort 
On June 6th, on an overcast but rain-free morning, archaeologist from Nantwich, Malcolm Reid, led a History Society group around Old Oswestry Hillfort. He demonstrated how the ramparts were built and adapted over the centuries from the Iron Age to Roman times, and showed us the large pits whose purpose still remains a mystery.  Wat’s Dyke led to and from the hillfort.

Although the WW1 trench system is overgrown we could imagine the troops from nearby Park Hall camp training there for the Western Front, including men from the Royal Welch Fusiliers and the Cheshire Regiment. In recent years English Heritage, who manage the site, have erected display boards at various points, and created steps and pathways. We were interested to hear that the  Olympic Torch had passed just below about a week  previously.  Old Oswestry is a national monument which deserves to be further developed.
