Roy Plume writes, following our stories over the weekend about the near-tragedy in Buerton on Friday night when a wooden pole carrying a live power cable fell right across the A525. It appears the pole had rotted away at the base.

Roy says: "Re the telegraph pole, I have a wooden telephone pole (not power ) almost in my drive. I know BT have a program of maintenance for their poles as a man dug all the way around it 2ft deep to check for rot not two months ago.

"You would think a more critical power pole would receive at least the same attention. My pole slopes and looks rediculous but not enough apparently to straighten it. Maybe when they fall down the new ones are put up straight."
