The Memorial in Catalogue

Those that read yesterday's article by John Bolton will be delighted to see the excerpts reproduced here of the catalogue from which Audlem's Memorial in the Square was purchased.

To recap, John Bolton wrote yesterday:

"While passing through your village last week, I was delighted to find the well preserved Memorial lamp pillar from c 1877.

"I have been unable to find any information on the web as to its origins, so maybe the following may be of interest to you:

• The pillar was manufactured by Walter Macfarlane & Co at the Saracen Foundry Glasgow – it is their diamond trademark on the collar below the base (see second photo).
• It is Lamp Pillar No 29 as illustrated in their catalogue of circa 1882.

We are sure there is much more that can be said about the memorial which was recently featured on BBC1 North West Tonight in their coverage of Mend our Mum and in a talk at the Wellcome Trust in London.
