Memorial dedication today

The Dedication of the Memorial to Paupers Graves is today, 14th June, at 11.00am.

The history of all that has led to this moment is as follows:

I took over as Clerk to the Committee in 2001 following the death of my wife, Joan. 

I reviewed the cemetery over the next few years and felt that the area to the bottom of the land, which was overrun by brambles and wild weeds plus a large rabbit warren, should be cleared. 

Studying the registers, I realised that many forgotten graves lay under this uncared for area.

This resulted in the listing of those now named on the new memorial stone.

They were buried in what was un-consecrated land – a very large part of the cemetery was such and in the 90s, Bill Seville consecrated all the land   – and buried, as it was said, “on the parish.”

Now today, a new Granite Memorial records the names of all, with details of their burial, age and grave number.

At last a marker to those who had become forgotten.
