The next Audlem District History Society meeting is on Thursday 15th May at 7.15 for 7.30pm in the Scout & Guide Hall in Cheshire Street.

The speaker is local resident Bob Cartwright who, in this the 100th Anniversary Year, will be talking about 'The Origins of the First World War'. While admitting that the airwaves and press have been full of the subject this year, he says that his approach will be a little different.

Not only will he review how historians have judged this world-changing event, but will name the countries and individuals he believes were primarily responsible for the war and its 10 million deaths. And you may be surprised by his conclusion.

Bob studied Modern History at University, specialising in Balkan History, and has kept an interest in the subject ever since. The Origins of the First World War is a complex subject with every country involved trying to avoid the blame and within days of its outbreak releasing often misleading documents to try and prove their innocence.

The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 conclusively blamed Germany – a decision that almost certainly led to the 1939-45 War. But did the so-called Peace Makers get it wrong?

Non-members will be very welcome (£3). Refreshments provided.
