Picking up on yesterday's headline about 'keeping it local', as Council Tax bills are dropping through letterboxes, it does appear that 'local is cheaper'. While total bills have increased by 4.5%, or double the inflation rate, the local services from Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council have increased by a more reasonable 2.7%. At a very local level, Audlem Parish Council's charge has actually reduced by 2.5%.

Almost 75% of the bill, however, is taken up by Cheshire County Council's charges which have increased by a massive 4.9%. The Cheshire Police Authority's charges have gone up even more, by 5.7% – which makes you wonder where all the speeding and parking fine money has disappeared!
