Local MP, Stephen O'Brien, has been appointed Minister for International Development in the new Government.

He was re-elected as MP for Eddisbury and was a front-runner to be named as a Health Minister, a post which he held in opposition. The new coalition arrangements, however, meant that had to be rethought as a Lib Dem MP took on a Department of Health ministerial post.

Stephen O'Brien, who was born in Tanzania, is delighted with his new post at International Development. He says: "It relates to many of the interests and activities that I have been involved with politically and personally for the last twenty years."

"I have the opportunity to contribute to decisions which can transform the lives of millions of people around the world on behalf of the British tax payers who fund development work in some of the poorest countries," he added.

Commenting on his recent re-election, he said: "I give all my constituents this pledge that, regardless of political persuasion, I will always work hard for each and every one of them, and I will always fight to defend them and our area's interests."
