"WARM WEATHER AHEAD?

LET'S HEAD FOR THE ARCTIC CIRCLE."

After the endless Arctic-like weather we've experienced, who wants to head for the Arctic Circle? Audlem Probus Club members, that's who!

No need for snowshoes and thermal underwear though – this trip is courtesy of a presentation by guest speaker Jeremy Nicholls. This Thursday (Feb 27), Jeremy, a local man known for his association with Audlem History Society, will take us "To the Arctic Circle by Train".

Jeremy spent his early years in Nantwich and Audlem He spotted a golden opportunity to travel for relatively little cost when the "Interrail Pass" was introduced in 1972. For £27.50, under-21s could explore up to 21 European countries for a month. After trips through central and southern Europe in 1972 and 1973, Jeremy travelled through Scandinavia in 1974, this time heading from Denmark, through Sweden to Stockholm, across the Baltic to Finland, north over the Arctic Circle to northern Norway, south to Oslo and back to Denmark.

Forty-two years later, Jeremy and his wife followed much of the same route but, as Jeremy says: "This time, the ground rules were very different: overnight journeys in sleeper compartments and absolutely no youth hostels!"

For those who make up Probus Club's membership of retired business and professional men and women, Jeremy's illustrated presentation looks at the Nordic countries which, he says, "outside a few major cities, are remarkably little visited by the British, despite their stunning beauty, fascinating history and strong links with the UK."

From 10am, Thurs Feb 27th, Audlem Public Hall. Visitors Welcome.
