After the damning report detailed on Audlem Online that Leighton Hospital was officially one of the worst hospitals in the country, this week's Chronicle reports that the official watchdog, the Healthcare Commission, has given the hospital 30 days to shape up.

The hospital has responded to its "weak" rating, the lowest possible, by saying that despite the poor rating, there were certain areas highlighted as good in the report. Trust chief executive Stephen Eames said: "We recognised we had not achieved compliance in some of the core standards when we submitted our self assessment in April. Since that time, I am confident we have addressed many of the areas highlighted as weak in this, the first annual health check, particularly in relation to cancelled operations and waiting times."

A Back To The Black recovery strategy is being implemented because the Trust is £2 million in the red. That has involved axing more than 200 posts and another 20 are still to go.
