Latest on St James Church repairs

Some of you will have seen our abseiling stonemasons over the last week and some progress is being made.

This week saw the installation of a new access hatch to the roof of the tower with hydraulic assistance included. The old hatch of oak and lead was extremely difficult to open whilst balancing on the ladder access, so for health and safety reasons the new one has now been hoisted into place- it would not fit up the ladders internally. Well done to our excellent guys for its safe ascent!

More problems

On the tower masonry front however we have had some concerning news, the buttress and tower are in a much poorer state than we knew from external inspection and we now face new decisions on how to deal with the extra work which must be done. More updates on this when we know more details.
