Late goals save Saints

ASC Saints U11s football team hosted Crewe Terriers yesterday.

With Saints currently league leaders and Terriers 2nd from bottom with just one win to their name, one might have thought Saints should win comfortably.
Indeed, a few weeks ago the reverse fixture had been won 9-0 by Saints.

Quickly after the kick off, Saints put together a few passes and a simple finish to open the scoring and all seemed well. What followed though was a below par performance from Saints. Whether it was complacency, tiredness or just a bad day is unclear but the performance was not a good one.

Players seemed reluctant to tackle and work hard. Distribution of the ball was more hopeful punts up field rather than considered passes! Terriers equalised after poor marking by Saints and an upset was not out of the question.

However, in the last few minutes of the game, Saints found some fluency and scored a break away goal to edge in front. Then, with literally the last move of the game they extended the lead to 3-1 with a decent passing move.

The win maintains the Saints position as League leaders with five games to play, the 2nd placed Nantwich do have a game in hand and can draw level.

Next Sunday, Saints play a cup quarter final away Vs The Cougars (the only side to have beaten Saints in the league this season!). 10.00am kick off at The Barony.
